Hi,
another I-pod question. can books be downloaded and read with the I-Pod?
I just won one and don't real.ly like to walk around and listen to music, but would like books. just wondering if I can download and listen to them with the I-Pod?
thanks in advance.
TheAsianInvasion, I have the 16gb nano, 4th Generation, have you tried installing the LATEST VERSION of ITUNES? and do not plug your ipod in to the computer till you have ITUNES installed and running for the first time, it will recognize your ipod, and register it to your copy of itunes and your computer..
I have this same ipod and it has worked fine for me. Make sure that when you are in the devices window of itunes, you make sure that accessibility voices are checked.
Do I need Jaws version 10 to install I-tunes or will Jaws 9 work with it?
itunes8. will. work. with. any. version. of. jaws. I'm sorry, but this is getting on my nerves.
Only JAWS 9 and 10 are officially supported.

And no, I've never had any problems with my iPod. It's always worked fine.
hmm, yeah I've reset it but nothing happened. I'll mess around with it some more and try and figure out the problem.
and yes, I do have ITunes8.
Make sure that the manual sync option isn'tchecked - I can't remember the exact wording but its the option where it shows up as a removable drive.
Failing that, try a firmware update? When I plugged min in it wanted to download one anyway.
What's the name of that talking iPod that's out now? I want to view the specs and stuff for it and pricing.
Its in the topic title.
Hi,
for all of those who were wondering about books on the iPod nano 4th gen, I've got the answer for you. I'll write this like a recipe, so here goes. Hopefully by following this, you'll be all set with all your audio book needs for quite a while to come.
Equipment:
1 Computer with Itunes 8 and an active internet connection.
1 iPod nano 4th gen with a USB cable to connect to the aforementioned computer.
a few places to get free audiobooks from such as Librivox.org
1 copy of win rar, 7 zip, or the zip utility that comes with windows.
1 copy of mp3 to iPod audio book converter.
Instructions:
1. first go to google and type in mp3 to iPod audiobook converter. you should find it in the first 10 results or so. This program is free and open-source, so download and install.
2. Go to www.librivox.org which is a place where you can get free public domain audiobooks such as Shakespeare, L. Frank Baum, and over 2000 other titles.
3. Search for the book you want and go to its download page. Download the zip file and save it on your computer in a folder called books or some name you'll remember.
4. Extract the zipped file to its own folder for example if you downloaded "The Honor of the Big Snows" the file name would be HonorofbigsnowsXX64kbmp3.zip the folder name would be the same thing just without the .zip extention. (The XX is for the person's initials who recorded the book.)
5. launch mp3 to iPod audio book converter and hit space or click on the add files button. Navigate to the folder the book is placed in and press end to go to the end of the file listing. Then press Crtl Shift Home to select all the files at once. Then press Enter to open them.
6. They all will be in a list view in the correct order you will hear them in on your ipod. Now you can set the options such as whether you want all of them as one big output file or several smaller ones, about 1 per mp3 file.
7. You can tab to the tag edditor and edit the artist info and other info if you want. Here's the way I edit mine so they show up as book title and author on my iPod.
Artist: James Oliver Curwood.
Writer: (nothing)
Title and Album: The Honor of the Big Snows
Genre: Books and spoken
8. Now you can press the "convert now" button and you will get a save as dialogue box. The default name is the name of the first mp3 file with a .dot m4b extention. In this example the filename would be "Honorofbigsnows Underline 01 Underline curwood underline 64kb.m4b. What I do is just remove the 01 and the underline character before it to get this result. Honorofbigsnows underline curwood underline 64kb.m4b I'm just writing out the punctuation for those of you who have it turned off.
9. Now you can find a folder to save the file in. what I usually do is to keep it in the folder where the zip file is or put it in a folder called iPod audiobooks or something like that.
10. Press enter and the conversion process will begin. Wait until it is finished before moving on to step 11. You will know when it is finished because a dialogue will pop up saying that the output file was saved to the folder you specified in the previous step.
11. Go and close out of the mp3 to iPod audiobook converter if you are done with it. Then Go launch iTunes.
12. Go to the file menu and chose the add files to library option. In the dialogue that opens, navigate to the folder where you saved the .m4b file and open it. The book will be imported in to the audiobooks section of your iTunes library.
14. Connect your iPod and let it syncronize with your library. Wait a few minutes and then disconnect it. If all goes well, you should have a converted book in your iPod under the audiobooks section in the music menu called "The Honor of the Big Snows" by James Oliver Curwood or whatever book you chose to convert.
Happy reading!
sweet thanks shawn.
Welcome. Besides, I kinda figured that someone out there could use that program, seemed like a shame to kinda let it go to waste, so I did that. Hope you can make good use of it.
